Did Le'Veon Bell sign his franchise tag? Steelers RB doesn't report, is ineligible to play in 2018

Image
And with that, the Le'Veon Bell saga has reached a conclusion lacking fireworks, grand arrivals, or last-minute surprises. On Tuesday, the 4 p.m. ET deadline for Bell to report and sign his franchise tag with the Steelers came and went, which means Bell definitely won't play football this season and almost definitely won't play for the Steelers ever again. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported 15 minutes before the deadline that Bell wouldn't be showing up. Sure enough, he didn't, which Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert confirmed after the deadline passed. Bell is ineligible to play football this year. "So be it," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said a couple hours before the deadline, via NFL.com. The saga really began all the way back in the spring of 2017, when the Steelers hit Bell with the franchise tag. Bell held out the entire summer as the two sides failed to agree to an extension. But he showed up in September and proceeded to total 1,946 ...

Stan Lee, Marvel Comics' Real-Life Superhero, Dies at 95

Image
Stan Lee, the legendary writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics whose fantabulous but flawed creations made him a real-life superhero to comic book lovers everywhere, has died. He was 95. Lee, who began in the business in 1939 and created or co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man, among countless other characters, died early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, a family representative told The Hollywood Reporter. Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee's daughter, J.C. Lee, also confirmed his death. Lee's final few years were tumultuous. After Joan, his wife of 69 years, died in July 2017, he sued executives at POW! Entertainment — a company he founded in 2001 to develop film, TV and video game properties — for $1 billion alleging fraud, then abruptly dropped the suit weeks later. He also sued his ex-business manager and filed for a restraining ...

The Cowboys’ 3-step winning formula starts with Ezekiel Elliott

Image
A loss to the Philadelphia Eagles could’ve been enough to close the book on the Dallas Cowboys’ 2018 season. Instead, the Cowboys pulled out a desperately needed 27-20 road victory to stay in the NFC East race. There’s still climbing to do — especially after Washington improved to 6-3 with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — but Dallas is back in the mix at 4-5. The Cowboys have a real shot at catching Washington too if they play the way they did Sunday night. The key for the Cowboys is to do what they did against the Eagles: Dominate time of possession. In the win against the Eagles, the Cowboys were on the field for 33:22 of game clock, compared to 26:38 for Philadelphia. That’s especially impressive considering the Eagles entered the game with an average time of possession of 33:46 — the best in the NFL. It was just the third time this year Dallas has been on offense for more time than its opponent. The Cowboys are 3-0 in those games. Dallas is designed to win time of...

Titans score convincing win against Tom Brady, Patriots

Image
The Titans’ path to January football grows clearer with each perfect pass by Marcus Mariota, each emergence of a viable offensive weapon, each standout play by a surging defense. And there’s been a lot of each the past two weeks. In front of 69,363, the Titans cruised to a 34-10 win over the Patriots at Nissan Stadium. Here are five things to know from Tennessee's second straight win: Defense is surging The No. 1 defense in the NFL played like it Sunday. Tennessee, which entered holding opponents to a league-best 17.6 points per game, had Tom Brady all out of sorts all day. The New England quarterback completed just 21 of 41 passes (for a season-low 51.2 completion percentage) for 254 yards before being yanked for Brian Hoyer midway through the fourth quarter. The Patriots had entered averaging 35.5 points over their last six games. Brady was sacked a season-high three times. Wesley Woodyard had 1.5 sacks, Logan Ryan had one sack and Jayon Brown had 0.5 sacks. Marcu...

Morning Briefing: A Veterans Day birthday celebration as we salute those who served

WEATHER There's frost on the windows and a cold breeze blowing through the town. Expect an overall chilly day, with the high reaching just 47 degrees. On Veterans Day 2018, Vickers, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, will turn 103 years old. 7 winners, 6 losers, and one big TBD from the Jimmy Butler trade

Image
After a long, public bout between a disgruntled Jimmy Butler and virtually everyone else on the Timberwolves — from young stars Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, to coach and president Tom Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden — Minnesota has finally agreed to trade the All-Star to the Philadelphia 76ers. In exchange, the Wolves will receive 3-and-D wing Robert Covington, versatile stretch four Dario Saric, and backup Jerryd Bayless. They will also surrender injured big man Justin Patton and receive a 2022 second-round pick as part of the trade. At first glance, the trade seems like an underwhelming return for Minnesota: an All-Star for two starters, no first-round picks, and they gave up an injured young player who may potentially become serviceable down the road. But there are clear winners and losers from this deal beyond the teams involved. Let’s explore all of them. Winner: Philly The 76ers returned virtually the same team from last season, and it was beginn...

Surreal scenes unfold as a fire ‘like Armageddon’ barrels toward West Hills

Image
At Zuma Beach, the Pacific Ocean was obscured by smoke. Horses, dogs and Southern Californians displaced by raging wildfires Friday sought refuge on the sand. The dress code called for protective face masks, not wetsuits. In Thousand Oaks, many of those still reeling from Wednesday’s mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill fled their homes with whatever they could grab on their way to safety. Crowded shelters turned away panicky evacuees for lack of space. Freeways were closed. Pepperdine University students awoke to texts ordering them to shelter in place. People like Shirley Hertel turned on television sets in horror and watched the homes they’d fled catch fire. “It was so surreal,” the Thousand Oaks resident said, shaken. “I left thinking everything would be OK. You don’t think your house will burn down.” Fire officials said that more than 150 homes had been destroyed in Southern California, casualties of the Hill and Woolsey fires, blazes that barreled into Malibu an...
