Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, pleads guilty to lying to Congress about Moscow project

Image
President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty Thursday in New York to lying to Congress about a Moscow real estate project that Trump and his company pursued at the same time he was securing the GOP nomination in 2016. In a nine-page filing, prosecutors laid out a litany of lies that Cohen admitted he told to congressional lawmakers about the Moscow project — an attempt, Cohen said, to minimize links between the proposed development and Trump as his presidential bid was gaining steam. Cohen made a surprise appearance Thursday morning before U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter Jr., who asked him to enter his plea. “Guilty, your honor,” Cohen replied. As part of the plea, Cohen said he had lied for the person listed in court documents as “Individual 1” — whom Cohen identified in court as Trump. “I was aware of Individual 1’s repeated disavowals of commercial and political ties between himself and Russia, his repeated statements that investigations of

You Can Finally Use Your iPhone On Google Fi, But There's A Big Catch

Image
Announced earlier today, Google has rebranded their cellular service as Google Fi. Perhaps even more importantly, you no longer have to use a Pixel phone to be able to use the service. Google Fi is now available for multiple Android devices as well as Apple iPhones running iOS. What's Google Fi? Formerly Project Fi, it's Google's "pay for what you use, month-to-month" cell service. There are no contracts and you pay $20 for unlimited talk and text per month, plus $10 per GB of data used. Even nicer, when you pay for an extra GB of data, but don't use it all, Google will give you a credit towards your next month of Fi equal to the unused portion. I used Project Fi for a month in 2016 and, while I enjoyed the service, determined I was going to end up paying way too much in data costs to make the service work for me. Plus, having to leave my iOS ecosystem behind to convert to Android was a hurdle I wasn't ready to face. However, a lot can change in

Mississippi Senate race: Cindy Hyde-Smith defeats Mike Espy

Image
Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith defeated challenger Mike Espy, a Democrat, in the runoff election for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi, CBS News projects. Hyde-Smith was appointed earlier this year by GOP Gov. Phil Bryant after Sen. Thad Cochran, also a Republican, stepped down. Hyde-Smith is the first woman elected to the Senate from Mississippi, and the Republican majority in the Senate will grow to 53-47. Espy, her opponent, is a former congressman and former agriculture secretary. Hyde-Smith and Espy advanced to a run-off because neither won 50 percent of the vote in the general election on Nov. 6. Hyde-Smith won 41.2 percent, compared to Espy's 40.8 percent, and Republican Chris McDaniel picked up 16.5 percent. President Trump endorsed Hyde-Smith, and visited Mississippi on Monday for two rallies supporting her campaign. Nicole Sganga contributed to this report. NASA Mars lander set for mission on red planet

Image
NASA's InSight Mars lander touched down successfully Monday afternoon. See our latest coverage here. A story from earlier Monday appears below. After a six-month voyage from Earth, NASA's InSight Mars lander reached the thin Martian atmosphere Monday afternoon to begin a nail-biting six-and-a-half-minute descent to the surface. After streaking through space at some 12,300 mph, it appeared to make a successful landing, kicking off a billion-dollar mission to probe the red planet's hidden interior. "The goal of InSight is nothing less than to better understand the birth of the Earth, the birth of the planet we live on, and we're going to do that by going to Mars," said Principle Investigator Bruce Banerdt. On Earth, plate tectonics and the constantly churning mantle have altered the planet's deep interior, obscuring its history and evolution. But Mars is a smaller planet and much less active than Earth, retaining the "fingerprints" of thos

Damarious Randall gives football to Hue Jackson after interception as Browns build big lead on Bengals

Image
After enduring two-and-a-half seasons of Hue Jackson, the Browns have unofficially passed the torch to the Bengals. On Sunday morning, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported that the Bengals are considering promoting special assistant Hue Jackson, who got fired by the Browns last month, to replace Marvin Lewis as head coach. The timing of La Canfora's report was perfect. A few hours later, the Browns and Bengals faced each other in Cincinnati. Sure enough, the Browns -- free from Jackson's reign -- proceeded to race out to a 28-7 lead at halftime with rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield continuing to look like a superstar quarterback in Freddie Kitchens' offense. In the process of the blowout, the Browns passed the torch to the Bengals with an unofficial ceremony. After picking off Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton's wildly overthrown pass in the second quarter, Browns safety Damarious Randall looked up, spotted Jackson standing there on the sideline, and h

Alabama vs. Auburn score: Live game updates, Iron Bowl highlights, football stats, full coverage

Image
AUBURN, Ala. -- No. 1 Alabama hosts rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl, a game that will resonate within the state for the next 365 days. All eyes will be on Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa -- the front-runner in the Heisman Trophy race. The sophomore has 31 touchdown passes and leads the nation in passer rating at 212.22. Auburn has struggled offensively due to issues along the offensive line, but QB Jarrett Stidham has the tangibles to make NFL scouts drool. He'll need an unusually strong performance from his big uglies against the Tide to replicate the success he had last year when he toppled the Tide and led the Tigers to the SEC West title. So far so good for Auburn at halftime as the Tigers have scored two touchdowns on the Tide, something neither LSU nor Mississippi State was able to do. Alabama does lead Auburn 17-14 at the break, but Auburn is nevertheless in the game at this point despite Stidham completing just 5-of-15 passes for 36 yards. A punt block that led t

Follow live: What's happening in Tiger vs. Phil

Image
They've talked about it for months. Finally, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are going to actually get down to playing their $9 million winner-take-all match. From the first shot, to the side bets, to the conclusion, we have you covered for every hole of their trip around Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Scoreboard: Mickelson 1 up through 16 holes 16th hole: Par 5, 626 yards The same story continues ... two pars. Both had a chance at the long par 5, but as has been the case all day, neither could make anything happen. 15th hole: Par 4, 467 yards See if this sounds familiar: Both have to scramble for par. Mickelson hits a perfect, classic Phil flop shot to kick-in range. Woods hits an awful chip after missing the green and then misses the putt to fall back into a hole with three holes left. The chatter between Tiger and Phil has been, well, mostly non-existent. "We got into our old mode of trying to beat each other's brains in," Woods says as they wal

Walmart Site Recovers After Shaky Start to Black Friday (Update: Walmart Responds)

Image
As of early Nov. 22, Walmart's website is fully operational and this story has been updated with a response from Walmart. They say misery loves company and today Walmart joined the ranks of Amazon as the former's website crashed just seconds after its Black Friday sales went live. Walmart had been teasing its Black Friday deals all week, and some of the best deals we had seen — such as this $99 Samsung Chromebook — were set to go live at 10pm ET tonight, but seconds after they went live, trouble reared its ugly head. First Walmart's site began to slow down and seconds later various shoppers and Tom's Guide editors began receiving error pages when browsing through Walmart. In a statement to Tom's Guide, a Walmart spokesperson said: Due to extremely high demand for our Black Friday deals last night, our site experienced some delays shortly after our event began online. Many customers were still able to check out smoothly, and we were able to quickly fix

American missionary, adventurer killed by tribe members on restricted and remote island

Image
The first time American John Allen Chau made it to the remote North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean, he came bearing gifts that included a football and fish. He interacted with some of the missionary — who survive by hunting, fishing and collecting wild plants and are known for attacking anyone who comes near with bows and arrows and spears — until they became angry and shot an arrow at him. It struck a book Chau was carrying, and the 26-year-old adventurer and Christian missionary swam back to a boat of fishermen that was waiting at a safe distance. That night, he wrote about his adventures and left his notes with the fishermen. He returned to the island the next day, on Nov. 16. What happened then isn't known, but on the morning of the following day, the fishermen watched from the boat as the tribesmen dragged Chau's body along the beach. Dependera Pathak, director-general of police on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, said Wednesday that the seven fis
